The Price family originally came predominantly from Scotland and Ireland.  They also came from England, Great Britain, Germany, and Canada. 

In the 1881 British Census the highest distribution of the name was in Radnorshire and London.  The next highest were Brecknockshire, Herefordshire, Flintshire, Shropshire, Denbighshire, Glamorgan, Carmarthenshire and Worcestershire.  Using the 1891 English and Wales Census, the highest distribution was in Lancashire, Monmouthshire, Cumberland, Staffordshire, and Glamorgan.  The next highest were Brecknockshire, Herefordshire, Monmouthshire, Flintshire, Shropshire, Kent, Denbighshire, Cheshire, Radnorshire and Worcestershire.  The 1891 Scotland Census shows the highest distribution in Lanarkshire. The next highest is in Renfrewshire, Midlothian, Ayshire, and Aberdeenshire.

The name Price is the anglicized form of ap Rhys which means “son of Rhys” and is one of the most common Welsh surnames.  The Welsh translation of Rhys is “enthusiasm”.  It is the 47th most popular name in England.  It originated in Ireland in the 14th century, a variation of Bryson.  In Old French it is derived from pris which means price or prize.  The occupational name meant a “fixer or prices”.  In the Jewish culture the spelling is Preuss or Preis.  It is the 84th most popular surname in the US. 

Price immigrants to the United States came predominantly from England.  They also emigrated from Ireland, Great Britain, Wales, Scotland, and Germany, according to the U.S. Immigration Collection at Ancestry.com.   Immigrations spiked immensely in 1871.  Almost all of the immigrants departed from Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland.

The average life expectancy for the Prices in 1940 was 40 and increased to 75 by 2000.  According to the 1880 US Census the top occupations were farming and laboring.
